A Pedagogical Static Analysis Framework For Teaching Functional Programming
Abstract
Static analysis techniques have proven invaluable in identifying potential errors and improving code quality in imperative programming languages. However, their application to functional programming paradigms, particularly in educational contexts, remains underexplored. This paper presents a pedagogical approach to static analysis specifically designed for functional programs, focusing on common patterns, anti-patterns, and learning opportunities that arise in functional programming education. We propose a framework that not only detects errors but also provides educational feedback to help students understand functional programming concepts more deeply. Our approach emphasizes immutability, higher-order functions, recursion patterns, and type system utilization. Through case studies in Haskell and OCaml, we demonstrate how pedagogical static analysis can enhance the learning experience and accelerate student comprehension of functional programming principles.
